For ten years I worked as a nurse practitioner at HMC in The Hague. I loved my profession, but the workload was unsustainable. Double shifts, staff shortages, and a salary that didn't match the responsibility. When I heard that Australia was actively recruiting healthcare workers, I started exploring.

The first step was registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). As a Dutch nurse with a bachelor's degree and specialization, I had to go through an extensive skills assessment. My diploma was recognized, but I needed to provide additional documentation about my clinical hours and competencies. The entire AHPRA process took five months.

With my AHPRA registration in hand, I looked for employers willing to sponsor. Nurses are on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List, so a Subclass 482 visa was relatively straightforward. The Royal Adelaide Hospital offered me a contract with a salary of AUD 95,000 per year, plus penalty rates for evening and weekend shifts. In the Netherlands I earned EUR 52,000 gross β€” the difference is enormous.

Adelaide wasn't my first choice β€” I was thinking Sydney or Melbourne. But my migration agent advised Adelaide because South Australia gives extra points for state nomination and waiting times are shorter. In hindsight, the best decision ever. Adelaide is a city on a human scale: affordable, calm and with a fantastic food scene thanks to the nearby Barossa Valley wine region.

The Australian healthcare system is different from the Dutch one. Medicare covers basic care, but many people also have private health insurance. As a healthcare provider I notice there's more appreciation for nurses. The nurse-to-patient ratio is better, there's more support and working conditions are excellent β€” including superannuation (pension) of 11.5% on top of your salary.

My pathway to permanent residency runs from the 482 visa to a Subclass 186 (Direct Entry). After two years with the same employer I can make the transition. My employer has already confirmed they want to nominate me. In about a year I'll hopefully be a permanent resident β€” and I'll never have to go back to double shifts for a meager salary.
