Working Holiday to permanentMoved in 2023

After my communications degree in Utrecht, I knew one thing for certain: I wanted to see the world before settling down anywhere. Australia was the obvious choice — the Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417) is easy to apply for if you're under 31 with a Dutch passport. Within two weeks I had my visa.

The first months were pure adventure. I worked in cafés in Sydney, picked fruit in Bundaberg and did bar work in Cairns. For the second year WHV you need to do 88 days of regional work — I chose a farm in the Lockyer Valley near Brisbane. It was backbreaking, but I earned well and it entitled me to a second year.

Brisbane surprised me. Everyone goes to Sydney or Melbourne, but Brisbane is a hidden gem. Smaller, more relaxed, cheaper and with a subtropical climate you won't want to miss. I found a job at a marketing agency in Fortitude Valley that was willing to sponsor me for a Subclass 482 visa.

The transition from WHV to a sponsored visa was complicated. My employer had to do Labour Market Testing — proving no Australian was available for the role. That took four months and lots of paperwork. But it worked, and suddenly I had a four-year visa with a pathway to permanent residency.

Life in Brisbane is wonderful. I live in West End, a neighborhood full of cafés, vintage shops and live music. Rent is AUD 380 per week for a one-bedroom apartment — half of what you'd pay in Sydney. On weekends I go to the Gold Coast (an hour's drive) or the Sunshine Coast. And winter? It doesn't exist here — it never gets colder than 15 degrees.

My advice to other twenty-somethings: grab that WHV and go. You don't need to have everything planned. But once you're there, keep your eyes open for sponsorship opportunities. Build relationships, work hard and show what you're worth. Australia rewards people who show initiative.
